Downstem Sizing Guide: How to Measure Joint Size & Length

A downstem is sized by two measurements: joint diameter and length. Get both right and any downstem will seat perfectly in your Beaker or Straight Tube; get either wrong and it won’t fit — or won’t reach the water. Here’s how to measure correctly the first time.

Step 1: Identify Your Joint Diameter

Premium glass uses two standard ground-joint sizes:

• 14.5mm — often just called “14mm,” common on smaller and mid-size pieces.
• 18.8mm — often called “18mm,” the standard on full-size ROOR® Beakers and Straight Tubes.

A quick reference if you don’t have calipers: a dime sits roughly flush on a 14.5mm opening, while a nickel is closer to an 18.8mm opening. When in doubt, check your piece’s product listing — every ROOR® listing specifies the joint size.

Step 2: Measure the Length

Downstem length is measured from the bottom of the ground joint (where it stops sliding into the piece) to the tip. To find the right length for your piece:

• With the piece empty, slide a thin rod or straw through the joint until it gently touches the inside base.
• Mark the rod where it exits the top of the joint, then measure to the tip.
• Choose a downstem roughly an inch shorter than that measurement — long enough to sit well below the waterline, short enough that the tip never rests against the glass.

Step 3: Choose Your Diffusion Style

Once the fit is right, the downstem style determines how the piece pulls.

• Open-Ended ($40) — a single opening for direct, unrestricted airflow and the classic chug. The easiest to clean.
• 13-Hole Diffused ($80) — thirteen precision openings break the draw into smaller bubbles for noticeably smoother, cooler pulls.
• Gridded ($50) — a fine grid of slits produces the most refined diffusion in the lineup, with a dense, stacked bubble pattern and minimal drag.

Reducing and Low-Profile Downstems Explained

Two more terms you’ll see on ROOR® listings:

• Reducing — the joint and bowl ends are different sizes. A reducing downstem in 18.8mm → 14.5mm fits an 18.8mm piece while accepting 14.5mm bowls — useful if you prefer smaller slides or already own 14.5mm accessories. Reducing versions of the 13-hole diffused and gridded styles are also available.
• Low-profile — a shorter joint section that sits closer to the piece for a cleaner, more compact look.
